Ruby and husband, Raleigh Radford, were well known in the Cane River Community for their devotion and service.  Together, they owned the Raleigh Radford General Store and ran the Cane River Post Office.  He, as Post Master and she, as a postal worker.  After Mr. Radfords retirement, she continued running the Post Office until it was discontinued.

Their love of children extended beyond their own.  They provided education supplies and clothing to children in need.  The young people in the community affectionately called them Aunt Ruby and Uncle Raleigh.

Ruby's work ethics was so great she put off retirement and worked at Haven Heights Rest Home for 20 years.  She worked well into her eighties when poor health forced her to retire.  She was talented in arts and crafts.  Many family and friends enjoy her beautiful creations in needlework, ceramics and quilts.

Ruby's tender heart was a great asset to Yancey County.  The late Harlon Holcombe, former owner of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, once related to the family that between Ruby and he, many unfortunate people in Yancey County were buried with dignity.

The family would like to express it‘s deep gratitude to Vera Hall, Dr. Polgar and the nurses and staff of Brookside Rehabilitation and Care that provided loving kindness, compassion and excellent care during her time with them.
