MERKEL- J. L. (Jake) Massey, 80, longtime Merkel resident died at 5:30 pm Sunday at a local nursing home after a two month illness. Funeral services will be at 4 pm Monday at Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel.

The Rev. N.S. Daniel, associate pastor of the United Methodist Church in Merkel, will officiate with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Born Feb. 17, 1894, in Fannin County, he moved to the Merkel area with his parents in 1903.

He was an early day cotton buyer and gine manager. For several years he had been land man for oil and gas leasing.

He was a veteran of WW I.

Survivors include a brother, T.O.of 926 Victoria in Abilene; a sister-in-law, Mrs Eunice Massey of Merkel, and several nieces and nephews.

Paul bearers will be David Gamble, Bill Brown, Hob Robertson, Curtis McAninch, Joe Cypert, Booth Warren. Honorary pallbearers include soldiers of the Trent and Merkel Barracks of WW I.

The family will be at the J. C. Carson residence in Merkel.
