John Henry was a Recruiting Officer for the Union Army in Burnsville during the Civil War Papers for Col. George Kirk’s N.C. Mounted Infantry bears his signature. He did not mustered into the service till just before the war ended. Apparently a shrewd move on his part. Little risk and a good pension. His military record contains the following data: Enrolled March 4, 1865: Appointed Captain of CO. K, 3rd NC Regiment , By means of special order No. 81: Reported present at Knoxville and Greenville Tenn. A Pension File is also preserved in the National Archives #475-190. Lived in the Cane River Section of Yancy County. He was a Recruiter for the Union Army, 3rd NC Mtd Inf. Co. K , Where he held the rank of Captain. After the death of Mary Lynch, he married Mary Ellen Anderson and moved from Yancy Co. to Unicoi County, Tenn., then to Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma and is buried at Boggy Depot.

He was the son of William Ray and Jane Jennings. He married Mary Lynch in North Carolina. Their children: Robert Andrew, Eugenia, Lula, John M., Lorin, Ida Belle, Lucilla and Laura. He later married Mary Ellen Anderson.
