Previously served as Private in Company D, 16th Regiment N.C. Troops (6th Regiment N.C. Volunteers). Enlisted in this company in Rutherford County on July 8, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private. Reported present through February, 1864. Wounded in the thigh at Plymouth on April 18-20, 1864. Returned to duty prior to July I, 1864. Present or accounted for through December, 1864. Promoted to Corporal subsequent to December 31, 1864. Captured at Five Forks, Virginia, April 1, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, April 6, 1865. Released at Point Lookout on June 27, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

Rev. Housen D. Harrill attended Oak Grove Academy. During the Civil war he served in the 16th. N.C. Regiment. On February 17, 1872 at Cool Springs Baptist Church he was ordained a minister. He served several Baptist Churches in Rutherford County including Cane Creek, Mountain Creek, Cool Springs, Floyd's Creek, Round Hill, Bill's Creek and Pleasant Grove . He was credited with baptizing 805 persons
