Mrs. M.E. Lynch Died last Week - Well Known
Mrs. M. Evelyn Lynch died at her home near Gilkey on Nov. 4th. She was 84 years, 3 months and 16 days old. She was raised in Cool Springs Township, Rutherford county, and was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. William Harrill. She was married to H.P. Lynch on November 23rd, 1859 and there was born to this union 8 children, and six survive. One of her daughters died in Oklahoma (I think it should have stated Indiana) during her last illness and she was not notified of her death. She has 44 grandchildren. and 9 great grandchildren.
She passed away on the fourth of the month as did her husband, her daughter, and her son Lee W. Lynch. It is peculiar to every one that have died out of this family have died on the third or fourth of the month and each one of them died between the hours of 9 and 12:30 at night.
She spent the most of her life in the home where she died.
Her youngest child, Mr. E.A. Lynch [This should have said A.L.M. Lynch] is 40 years of age. Her six grandsons acted as pall bearers while six of her grand daughters were flower girls.
She was a good kind mother and Christian. To know her was to love her. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

Misc. Notes
Named for Humphrey Posey a well known Baptist Minister in western North Carolina in early 1800s. In December, 1869 he purchased 112 acres of land from his father established a farm on Piney Knob Road at Pine Pole Branch (a tributary of Mountain Creek) in Rutherford County. He was a Justice of the Peace in 1894. This was learned because he preformed the marriage of his 1st cousin M.K. Lynch and Urcilla Elliott in 1894.

Humphrey was active in several churches, especially Mountain Creek Baptist, during his lifetime. The first church he was a member was Rock Springs Baptist. He joined the church some time before going off to fight in the Civil War. After the war he returned to the church until he withdrew his membership September, 1868. I don't know when he joined Mountain Creek Baptist but in December, 1884 he was received as a Deacon. From 1887 through 1891 he served as Superintendent of the Sabbath School (Sunday School). Sometime between 1891 and his death in 1898, he moved his membership to Pleasant Grove Baptist.

As of Feb., 2003, his picture joined other veterans on the Wall of Faces at the National Parks Service Gettysburg Battlefield Welcome Center. The Wall of Faces recognizes those, regardless of which side, who were involved in the battle there in July 1863. He carried a small bible, which is still in the family, throughout the war. In it he had written that if he died, he requested that whoever found the bible return it to his wife. Humphrey survived the war and returned home.
