Gladys M. Fulks Smith, 88, of Lafayette, peacefully passed away on January 22, 2018 at her residence with her family at her side.

She was born on August 16, 1929 in Lafayette, the daughter of the late Roy B. and Mary (Jenkinson) Thomas. Gladys was a 1947 graduate of Lafayette Jeff High School.

She married her high school sweetheart, Donald E. Fulks, on October 24, 1948 and raised their two children together. He preceded her in death on July 8, 1993. Gladys then married Duane “Smitty” Smith on April 20, 1996. He preceded her in death on April 25, 2003.

In her younger years, Gladys worked for SS Kresge and Brown Rubber. After becoming a mother, she devoted her life to raising her family. She loved anything that involved her family but her favorite thing was time spent around the kitchen table, referred to as the “gathering spot”. She was an avid Purdue basketball fan, enjoyed the outdoors, camping, her flowers, and loved the many great dogs she had over the years. Gladys enjoyed bowling with her first husband, Donald, and then became a member of the La Femmes at the 40&8, where she and her second husband, Smitty, spent time with friends.

She is survived by two children; one brother; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death with her parents and husbands is an infant son, Michael Shawn Fulks; and four sisters.

Barbara E. (Flynn) Smith, 69, of West Lafayette, died at 11:20 AM Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. She had been a patient there three weeks and in failing health six months. Born Jan. 25, 1928, in Boswell, she graduated from Boswell High School and had lived in the Lafayette area since 1979, coming from Boswell.

Mrs. Smith was a nurse at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and was also a housekeeper and cook at Blessed Sacrament retiring from there in 1994.

Surviving is a daughter, Christine A. Nelson of Brookston; a son, Tony L. Smith of Battle Ground; two brothers, Jack Flynn of West Lafayette and Dale Flynn of Hoopeston, IL; and a sister, Virginia Peterson of Boswell." - Lafayette Journal & Courier - Sat 2/8/1997 (Obituary provided by Vonda)
