Martha was married three times:
#1 Martha Ward & Fields G. Patterson (b 1852) married Aug 10, 1873, Gilmer Co, GA; Bk 2, Pg 352. They had two children:
.. Sarah J. "Sallie" Patterson, b 1875
.. Robert L. Patterson, b 1876
Fields G. Patterson died before 1880; no legible tombstone found.
#2 Martha L. Patterson & William Patterson (b ca 1860) married Nov 15, 1882, Gilmer Co, GA; Bk 3, Pg 189 (by J. S. Smith, JP). They had two children:
.. Truman C. Patterson, b Sep 22, 1881
.. Mary L. Patterson, b 1884
It isn't clear whether this William Patterson died or if they divorced.
#3 Martha L. Patterson & J. S. Smith (b 1850) married Dec 10, 1899, Gilmer Co, GA, Bk 4, Pg 160. They did not have any children and later divorced. (Note this was the same J. S. Smith who had officiated at Martha's wedding to William Patterson.) They did not have any children.
The 1900 census of Gilmer Co for James S. & Martha L. Smith indicates that Martha had given birth to four children, three of whom were still living. In HH with James & Martha were Martha's three living children: (1) Sallie (Sarah Patterson) Burch (no marriage record found although census indicates she had been married for 7 years but had no children). (2) Truman C. Patterson, age 17, b Sep 1882; (3) Mary L. Patterson, age 16, b Mar 1884. (Martha's deceased child was Robert L. Patterson, b 1875.)
