WALKERTOWN – Mr. Edwin “Burtis” Hampton – “Smiling Burt”, 62, died March 3, 2015 at his home.

Burtis was born on March 12, 1952 in Buncombe County to Benjamin Kent and Beatrice Yow Hampton.

After receiving a 2-year degree from Blanton’s Business College in Truck Transportation Management, he married Vivian Campbell Hampton on September 1, 1973 and moved from Swannanoa, NC to Kernersville to work for Bowman Transportation for 12 years, Pilot Freight Carriers for 3 years and Old Dominion Freight Line for 25 years until disability.

Burtis was saved and accepted Christ at age 19. He has been a member of Kerwin Baptist Church for 41 years where he served as a deacon for 34 years, worked in the church bus ministry for 35 years, taught Sunday School, and served in the youth ministry. Nothing thrilled him more than to tell someone about Christ so they could know Him as their personal Savior. Burtis received the Brotherhood Order of the Arrow Eagle Scout award as a teenager and played trumpet in the high school band.

His proudest accomplishments were being a husband, father and grandfather. He loved fishing and taking his son, son-in-law and grandchildren fishing - and anyone else that would go!

Burtis was preceded in death by his father; and infant daughter, Heather Lynn Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian C. Hampton; a son, Seth Hampton; a daughter, Rebekah Hampton Bardin (husband, Timothy); 5 grandchildren, Tray, Carson and Sadie Bardin, Daisy and Isaac Hampton, all of Walkertown, NC; his mother, Beatrice Hampton of Walnut Cove, NC; a sister, Kay Hampton of Williamsburg, VA; 2 brothers, Kent Hampton and Brian Hampton, both of Asheville, NC; a niece, Beth Rock (husband, KC) of Chesapeake, VA; 2 great nieces and 1 great nephew.
