Anne Burwell Ware Montgomery, widow of John Beverley Montgomery, retired Major General, USAF, died in early August in her home in Alexandria, Va.

Anne Burwell Ware was the eldest child of Edward Macon Ware and Sue Garnett Watts of Ware's Wharf. She was born March 12, 1917 in Dunnsville, Va., and was 84 years old when she died. She attended Randolph Macon Woman's College for two years before transferring to William and Mary in 1935; she majored in English and history at the college. Anne was a retired officer of the City of Alexandria where she served 28 years as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals from 1961-1989. During 10 of those years, she served as a member of the City Planning Commision. In 1984, Anne received the "Woman to Woman Award" from the Alexandria Commission on the Status of Women for her outstanding achievement in preservation and development. She considered herself indebted to Leslie Cheek and his FA I and II classes for whetting her enduring interest in architecture. She enjoyed gardening and music, and visiting art museums and zoos.

Anne is survived by her only son, John Beverley Montgomery Jr.; and her brother, Edward Macon Ware.

Her friends and family will miss her witt and profound historical knowledge of Ware's Wharf and the history of Essex County.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, August 10, 2001, at the Rappahannock Christian Church Cemetery, Dunnsville. Marks-Bristow Funeral Home of Tappahannock.
