EDMOND
Gerald K. Beattie died peacefully in his sleep and went to be with Jesus on June 21, 2017. He committed his life to Christ when he was 12 years old and has since served the Lord faithfully. Always a hard worker, Gerald got his first job as a paper boy in 1952, which sparked a nearly half-century career with The Daily Oklahoman that lasted until 2001, when he retired as Circulation Director. Simultaneously, Gerald served in the U.S. Army Reserve, enlisting at the age of 17 in 1957, then commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 1960 and retiring as a Major after 20 years of service. He was passionate about his wife of 58 years, JoAnn Garrett, who he fervently pursued in high school and eventually won over. Three days after retiring, Gerald surprised his wife with a new motor coach, and together, they spent the last sixteen years traveling around the country and dividing their time between Edmond, OK and Mesa, AZ. Gerald approached his life with a joy that can only be found in Christ, and he made friends easily. Lively until the end, Gerald was actively involved in multiple sports, including softball, racquetball, and golf. He especially enjoyed spending time and watching football with his two daughters, Rhonda King and Tammy Beattie. He also loved coaching, swimming with, and spoiling his four grandchildren, Joshua King, Cassi and Cori Baumgardner, and Calli Prell, as well as his three step-grandchildren, Mike King and Bobbi and Ella Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred E. and Lucille (Hart) Beattie; and one brother, Alfred H. Beattie. The family invites friends to share memories of Gerald at the Viewing 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Vondel Smith South Lakes, 4000 S.W. 119th St. Funeral services to celebrate Gerald's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28 at Brookwood Baptist Church, 8921 S.
