DOCK BARNARD - Vera Rogers
Dock Barnard (1863-1941) a native of Big Ivy in Buncombe County, was the son of William T. and Aveline Lynch Barnard. He was the brother of Lack, Lee Tom, Norman, Andrew, Mary Barnard Williams, and Lucilla Barnard Horn. Dock was a young man when his family moved to Macon County in 1881.
Dock went to Cripple Creek, Colorado between 1882 and 1888 to work in a saw mill. His father and most of his brothers went also. One brother, Andy, was killed there on December 22, 1888, when a saw mill boiler exploded. An excerpt from the Franklin Press (March 4, 1896) read: "Dock Barnard, Baz Collins, John Ramsey, and George Mashburn left for Colorado." This means he made more than one trip. On one trip to the gold rush town of Cripple Creek, he bought a large diamond ring for his wife, Ellen. He and Ellen Winstead were married December 17, 1885. That was possibly before his first trip to Colorado. He saved his money in Colorado and bought a total of 92 acres of land from his father and brother Norman, during the years of 1896, 1898, and 1905.
Dock was a small, but energetic, man. No work was too hard or dirty for him to do if need be. He was one of the leading farmers in his day with cattle hogs, and corn as main crops. Six to eight mules were kept on the farm at a time to do the work as there were no tractors. Plowing, mowing, cutting and threshing wheat, stacking hay, and any other farm tasks were done with mules and men.
Dock was a county commissioner in Macon County in the late twenties and early thirties. The latter part of his term, he was Chairman which paid $1.00 per day. He died on January 22, 1941.
