HOLLIS — Mrs. Dorothy Jane "Ginger" Flack Withrow, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at home.
Born in Asheville on Dec. 31, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Roswell E. Flack, formerly of Rutherfordton and Memphis, Tenn., and the late Mrs. Lola McClean Flack, formerly of Spartanburg, S.C. She was a granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel O. McClean, formerly of Spartanburg, and a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Phifer, formerly of Spartanburg, with whom she made her childhood home.
She is a graduate of Stratford College in Danville, Va., and received a graduate degree in elementary education from Georgia State Teachers College in Milledgeville, Ga. She was an elementary school teacher for 40 years in the Rutherford County school system.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, William Harrill Withrow Sr., and two brothers.
She is survived by two sons, William H. Withrow Jr. and wife, Genna, of Hollis and David Charles Withrow and wife, Carol, of Athens, Ga.; one daughter, Danielle Kay Withrow of Hollis; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her son, Henry P. Withrow, died in infancy.
She lived her life in service to her family and every community in which she lived. She was a member of Hollis-Hopewell Ruritan Club and both Hopewell Methodist and Big Springs Baptist churches. The role she enjoyed the most was that of a "Navy wife." During her husband's 28-year naval career, she managed 39 different moves throughout the United States as well as tours of duty in Ecuador, Spain and New Zealand, where her husband had prominent diplomatic roles.
